How to Use This Document
This document is designed to introduce the reader to available bioremediation technologies, to aid in the selection of appropriate technologies for site remediation, and to provide an outline for a plan of action for future site activities.Provided in this document is a general description of each bioremediation technology considered in the document. These reviews provide a description of the technology, operational considerations, applications, and costs.
The Primary Key section of this document is designed as a question/answer process that can be used to identify the types of biotreatment processes that may be applicable to the site under review. By answering the questions provided in the Primary Key, you will be directed to "GO TO" another question until you reach a potential treatment option.
The Secondary Key is also designed as a question/answer process, but is used to score and rank the suggested biotechnologies identified as potentially applicable to your site in the Primary Key. To use the Secondary Key, you go to the specific bioprocess section suggested, for instance GO TO Bioventing 4.2.1, answer the questions, and write down the resulting score on the Worksheet provided at the back of the document. Total the score and rank its compatibility with your site using the table presented at the end of each Secondary Key (A = excellent, B, C, F = not appropriate).
The Plan of Action section provides guidelines for helping design and manage additional site investigations, treatability studies, and remedial action activities. Technical terms are also briefly described in the Glossary of Terms.
