Biotreatment of Mineral Oil Dielectric Fluid (MODF)

Dielectric fluids that are used in capacitors and transformers are called Mineral Oil Dielectric Fluids (MODF). These oils are composed of petroleum hydrocarbons that have been refined from the naphthenic (cyclic, but not aromatic) hydrocarbon component of crude oil. When MODF exists in soil or water environments, regulatory agencies regulate them as Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) compounds. Typically, electric utility companies excavate and dispose of small quantities of contaminated soils in landfills if the contaminated material is accessible. However, in some cases, excavation is not practical because the contamination is located near or below existing structures, such as transformer pads at transfer stations. In this case, excavation is not a realistic option.

Environmental BioTechnologies, Inc. (EBT) would like to present the advantages of in-situ bioremediation of MODF contaminated sites. In-situ bioremediation is a low-cost, permanent treatment technology used for hydrocarbon-contaminated sites.

Before implementation of an in-situ bioventing treatment operation in the field, it is recommended that important data be gathered by conducting a bench-scale bioventing treatability study. Contact EBT for a list of recommendations that can be used to determine the feasibility of bioremediation by in-situ bioventing, and to determine process kinetics and treatment end-points for designing a remedial process.

Results from treatability studies are used to design in-situ bioremediation processes for treatment of surface and subsurface soil, and groundwater contamination.

Environmental BioTechnologies, Inc. (EBT) conducts laboratory and field studies which provide valuable information for the design of your remedial operation. EBT provides technical, laboratory and field support for the design and operation of low cost in-situ biotreatment processes for remediation of MODF contamination.
