Environmental BioTechnologies, Inc. (EBT), founded in 1991, is focused on providing services for the petroleum and energy industries. A core expertise in microbial physiology and applied microbiology allows EBT to support a range of products and services for industrial, environmental, and consumer markets. EBT is located near Sacramento, California and is a part of the Bay Area biotechnology community. A 3,200 sq. ft., fully equipped microbiology and analytical chemistry laboratory facility supports our laboratory and technical services.
EBT is able to offer its customers a range of high quality products and services in the applied biotechnology field. These include:
- Oil exploration surveys using microbial geochemical technology;
- Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR);
- Consulting, in both industrial and environmental fields;
- Laboratory treatability and feasibility studies;
- Technical and laboratory support for field projects;
- Technology development and demonstrations programs;
- Technology for treatment of polyaromatic hydrocarbons;
- Program management, review, and evaluation;
- Market analysis and strategic planning.
Major technical areas supported by EBT include microbial based technology for oil exploration, the degradation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons associated with manufactured gas plant sites, remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons in soils and coproduced sands, and the development of microbial bioproducts for industrial applications.
While providing direct support to industrial customers, EBT is also committed to technology development and demonstration programs. We are pleased to have been selected into several SBIR technology development programs sponsored by the U.S. government, U.S. EPA's Emerging Technology Programs and SITE (Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation) Program and a US-Egypt Cooperative Research Grant funded by the National Science Foundation.
Technical Areas of Expertise
- Microbial Geochemical Exploration Technology (Oil Prospecting)
- Many oil and gas reservoirs can be detected by surface geochemical techniques that measure modifications in surface soils caused by the migration of reservoir gases to the earth's surface.
This technology is commercially used in the oil industry for a variety of applications such as definition of field boundaries in reservoir development activities, localization of unswept areas of produced reservoirs, upgrading or downgrading of land leases, and general oil prospecting in new regions.- Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery
- Field MEOR projects have been conducted in the United States, Australia, China, Rumania and Russia. These projects report beneficial results in most cases. Reported enhanced oil production resulting from MEOR processes vary from no impact to 13%, 19%, 36%, 50-65% and 204%. In addition to increased oil production, some projects report decreased water production, increased GOR and improved injectivity. Reported operational costs of the MEOR process range from $2.00 to $4.00 per incremental barrel of oil. EBT is currently initiated a commercial MEOR project in Texas.
- Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon Degradation
- EBT has one of the most advanced databases available concerning the use of brown and white rot fungal cultures for environmental treatment and remediation applications. Over 500 cultures were initially screened for their ability to degrade more than 20 different aromatic chemicals. EBT has identified a select group of 20-30 fungal cultures for degradation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with manufactured gas plant sites.
Technical applications of this bacterial and fungal technology include in situ soil and groundwater treatment, soil composting processes, and purification of water and air streams which contain PAHs.- Nitroaromatic Munitions
- EBT has developed a fixed film anaerobic bacterial process which is capable of degrading TNT and RDX, two nitroaromatic munitions, in aqueous waste streams, By careful optimization and control of bioreactor conditions, a fixed film of adapted cultures can degrade these chemicals and their metabolites, which in other aerobic and anaerobic processes tend to accumulate to significant levels.
This technology is suitable for continuous processing of groundwater and wastewater containing nitroaromatic chemicals. Market applications include: clean up of military sites, industrial waste water treatment, and decommissioning of munitions.- Petroleum Hydrocarbons
- Petroleum fuels and hydrocarbons represent a major class of chemical treatable by biological processes. EBT has support field remediation operations involving kerosene, diesel, crude oil and other weathered petroleum projects in soil and water environments. EBT technology development programs have focused on improving the rate of degradation of these high alkanes and on biostabilization of petroleum contaminated material.
Technology in this area is applicable to remediation of soil and groundwater by leaking underground storage tanks and pipelines and surface spills.- Bioproducts
- EBT's product packages have been designed based on our experience gained through conducting many laboratory treatability studies and following results of field remediation projects.
